An intergenerational initiative operating year-round, serving over 100 students across seven school sites in Metropolitan Detroit, this program focuses on workforce and leadership development, mathematics proficiency, and pathway development for Black males entering the teaching profession or pursuing STEM careers.
Participant Achievements
Math Proficiency: Our Youth Leadership Development Program has significantly exceeded national growth targets, with 75% of our elementary participants achieving or surpassing significant growth benchmarks.
Exceptional Growth: The program has recorded a remarkable 157% average growth in mathematics skills among elementary school participants, outpacing the nationally expected growth rate for their grade levels by 57%, as evidenced by standardized test results and assessments conducted at a partner school.

The Youth Leadership Development Program successfully creates a pipeline for Black males to enter the teaching profession or STEM-related fields, demonstrated by outstanding academic achievements, enhanced social skills, and a clear trajectory toward higher education and professional careers. This program elevates individual participants and contributes to BMEA’s broader goal of diversifying the teaching profession and STEM fields, ensuring that future generations have role models who reflect their community and experiences.
